I Accidentally Got 250k Views

Didn't know I had it like that

The other day I was scrolling YouTube.

And stumbled upon this video:

And I was like:

“Wait a second… that title looks familiar”

I went to my google drive and dug up this old script from the depths of my client folders.

I dusted it off, and there it was - the script that got over 276k views by now.

The owner of the channel didn’t tell me he posted it at all, and turns out its the 2nd best performer on his channel.

This video was the 1st ever video that he posted on his channel, and see it absolutely take off is heartening to say the least.

While the title + thumbnail did contribute to the success of the video (without it the video would have zero views), the script is what amplified it.

Truth be told, I totally forgot that I scripted that video because it had already been a couple months

I thought the idea was scrapped.

The way that I approached the documentary was by focusing on the basics:

  1. Storytelling

  2. Strong Transitions

  3. Cutting out the fat.

What I think that most documentary scripts get wrong is that they include too much information for the sake of it.

It’s easy to try to make the longest video possible to maximize watch times and Ad-Revenue.

But I think that a better way to approach it is to only introduce the key elements of the story, cut all the unnecessary detail out, make it emotive, and something that you’d want to watch on a TV while scrolling your laptop.

Short story for today.

Will be back with more newsletters now that I’m settled in Melbourne.

Story about Europe travels and Melbourne tomorrow.

Actionable YouTube Tip of The Day:

  1. Look at your script and identify what pieces of information don’t contribute to the larger story

  2. Cut out the fat

  3. Expand and give more context/opinions on the more interesting points
