My most controversial video
6 days ago I posted yet another Viral Banger… but it ended up being controversial.
6 days ago I posted yet another Viral Banger… but it ended up being controversial.
And, yes, I got a hate comment or two.
Across 2.4k views so far, I got 50+ hate comments.
Comments like…
"bro what happened to the editing 💀"
"bro pls go back to your original style editing, this is not engaging😢"
"Bruv made a video with stick man😂"
And I just want to say…
You guys got masterminded 😈
YES, the editing style is different.
YES, it's less intense… less animated… and less "retention optimised…"
And yes… it was uncannily similar to the original creator of the easy, actually format.
But in my humble opinion…
This highlights one of the biggest biases that almost every YouTube viewer and creator falls into:
Hindsight bias.
I made this video because the easy, actually format had gone massively viral.
Meaning that there was attention shifting towards the stickman drawing, dry, sarcastic, yet informative style.
Theoretically, my video could ride that trend and perform similarly to how the original creator’s videos did.
Getting 100,000 views…
Making tens of thousands of dollars from a stickman drawing.
But guess what…
Not everything goes according to plan.
And the video only hit 2.4k views, with the original creator sending me a love message.
The conclusion that most would draw is that I shouldn't have created this video in the first place.
But we never would have known that to be the case.
Most are only saying that it was a bad idea because the video flopped.
If the video had gotten 100,000 views, I would have been touted as a genius.
They would have carved out statues in my name.
The truth is this…
My channel is currently sitting at 1,500 subscribers.
I am still in the audience-building stage.
This means that I can afford to make mistakes and experiment with different content styles until one works the best.
While the first videos performed well, that doesn’t mean that you should stop experimenting and create the same videos till the end of time.
The lesson?
Don’t fall prey to hindsight bias.
Actionable YouTube Tip of The Day:
(Implement this to make better videos)
Come up with 100 viral video ideas
Filter it down to 10 ones you think are the best
Test content that you would deem as ‘risky’. You won’t regret trying new styles 5 years from now.
