Why Long-Form is King
And the death of short form content
Welcome to the YouTube Scriptwriting Newsletter!
Bryan here from Viral Bangers.
Today I am emailing to talk about why long-form content is king, and why short-form will never replace long-form.
Deep Dive
Not all views are created equal.
On YouTube, there are low-quality viewers, and then there are high-quality viewers.
Low-quality viewers watch your video once, and never come back.
But high-quality viewers will make up your true fanbase.
They’ll watch one video on your channel, and another, and another until they consume every single video.
And they are constantly sitting on the edge of their seats, refreshing your channel, waiting for the next video to pop up.
That is the kind of audience we want to build.
It’s the kind of audience you can tell them to do anything.
You could tell them to throw sh*t at the wall to make money online and they’d actually do it.
So the big question comes now… how exactly do we get high-quality viewers, while filtering out low-quality viewers?
This comes down to the type of content you make.
With long-form content, the viewer spends more time with you, building a relationship and getting to know you better - making that view a higher quality one.
But with short-form content, the viewer doesn’t even opt to click on your video, they just randomly scroll and stumble upon it, and after a short 30-second clip they go on to consume 300 other shorts.
Whenever a viewer comes onto YouTube, they spend their attention like its currency.
When you spend 10 minutes on YouTube, they could either watch:
1 creator (for 10 minutes on a long-form video)
20 creators (20× 30-second on YouTube shorts)
On a piece of LF content, if the video is high quality, you will simply capture the attention the equivalent of 20 other creators.
With shorts, it is hard to build familiarity with a 30-second clip that is then in competition with 19 other creators.
Which means that if you want to build an immortal brand on YouTube, focus on long-form content in 2024.
Because long-form is the long game.
Every single creator who is YouTube famous has placed all of their attention on long-form content for the past few years, and they are doubling down in 2024.
While you may get relatively fewer views on long-form videos compared to YouTube shorts, I’d rather have 1000 people who know me really well, than 100,000 who have only seen my face for 10 seconds.
You want to be known well, not well known.
Actionable YouTube Tip of The Day:
(Implement this to make better videos)
Take the 10 hours you’d spend on recording, editing and posting shorts and spend it on creating long-form content
Do this for 6 months
Your videos will go more viral - and you will make more money long-term.
